HRBYCA Members and Hudson River Community,
Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant Decommissioning Update
From NYState Assemblywoman Sandra R Galef 95th District
“The federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has proposed new rules that would affect the decommissioning in progress at Indian Point.
“The proposal decreases oversight; notably, it allows for the dumping of nuclear waste into the Hudson River and eases tracking requirements as nuclear waste is transported across our state and the country.
“… attached [is] a letter to the NRC Chairman expressing my alarm at the intended rollback of protections.
“To read through the new regulations as proposed by the NRC, visit: https://www.regulations.gov/document/NRC-2015-0070-0229.
“If you would like to comment to the NRC about these new proposed rules, they are accepting comments until August 31. Click on the “Comments” tab on the link above to share your thoughts.”
This is a letter from the HRBYCA Board and President Jerry Silverman
“As President of the Hudson River Boat and Yacht Club Association (HRBYCA) I am writing of behalf of the association to urge the NRC to reverse course on the roll back of regulations regarding oversight of the decommissioning of Indian Point Nuclear Facility in Buchanan, NY. Careful consideration must be given to the population density in the Westchester County NY area as well as the immediate proximity of the facility to the Hudson River. The health of the Hudson River has been a major effort for the past 50 years and only now are we beginning to see the evidence of its return to health. We also know that there is a long way to go. HRBYCA has been a long-standing advocate for the health of the river and its surrounding areas. We are vocal supporters of all initiatives that encourage a cleaner and safer viable recreational resource. The NRC's position to allow reduced oversight, potentially dump nuclear waste into the Hudson and ease trafficking requirements for hauling waste off site and across state lines seems to completely disregard the essential protective mission of the NRC and all the HRBYCA stand for. That said, The HRBYCA strongly opposes these changes in regulations and easing of exemptions.”
